Area of Concentration: Social Anthropology

It contemplates the formation of anthropological scientists at master's and doctoral level with the capacity to work together with archaeologists and bioanthropologists. It focuses on the theoretical training in Social Anthropology, directed to work in the Pan-Amazon region, taking into account the anthropological relationship and social subjects with which the professionals work to privilege the understanding of the cultural diversity of the traditional peoples that inhabit the region, from different perspectives, native and academic.

Research Line

Gender and Sexuality

It discusses knowledge, practices, conventions, representations, sociabilities, identity cultures and moral regimes at the intersection with social markers of difference, especially social class, generation, race / ethnicity, religion and corporeality / corporeity from the perspective of gender and sexuality. It analyzes identity politics of recognition and affirmative action, multiple legalities, rights and tensions, limits and potentialities in the social construction of subjects, subjectivities and collective identities.

Research Line

Migrations, Diasporas and Ethnicities

It investigates the diversity and interculturality of experiences of local or migrant groups, native or transplanted, whether or not subject to diasporas, in different historical and environmental contexts, inside and outside the Pan-Amazon region. It discusses heterogeneities, displacements, pluralities of ways of life, racial and ethnic collectives, focusing on processes of political identification, social markers of difference that permeate social mobilization, past and present.

Research Line

Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Populations

It investigates the indigenous peoples and the traditional populations in the Amazon from the cultural and biological diversity, with the perspective of apprehending the different pieces of knowledge that allow the establishment of social relations with the landscape. It seeks to understand the diverse and plural forms of social and political organization in a synchronic and diachronic way, taking care of the material and immaterial cultural heritage of the traditional peoples.

Research Line

Memory, Landscape and Cultural Production

It investigates memory in different meanings, supports, manifestations, uses and appropriations, discussing its tensions, interconnections and perceptions in the experiences of diverse and distinct groups and social subjects situated in spaces and times historically determined. It approaches the landscape as a dynamic product of the relations between human groups and environments, investigating ontologies and cosmologies. It studies cultural production, highlights the plurality of oral, written, visual and virtual registers and is concerned with the dynamic understanding of social relations, focusing on other dimensions learned in interculturality.

Area of Concentration: Archeology

It aims at the training of archaeological scientists at Masters and Doctoral levels. The focus of the area of concentration is the theoretical formation in anthropological archeology, directed to work in Pan-Amazon, taking into account the relation of the archaeologist and the archaeological patrimony with the populations that inhabit the region

Research Line

Archeology in the Amazon

It investigates the diverse temporal and spatial contexts of human occupation in the Amazon, from the archaeological vestiges left behind and the transformations carried out in the landscape. It investigates the indigenous occupation, the contacts that occurred between the different social groups that inhabited the region in different historical times. It carries out reflexive archaeological research and in relation to the populations that now inhabit the region, from the perspective of public archeology.

Research Line

Culture Material, Heritage and Society

It discusses the perceptions of different social groups on the material culture, considering the critics to the category "patrimony"; the reflections of other epistemologies of material and immaterial culture; and the mapping of the singularities that constitute the person-object relationship in different contexts. It also reflects on the correlations between cultures, knowledge, actions and rights.

Area of Concentration: Bioanthropology

It aims to qualify professionals to be able to work in the different interfaces between Archeology, Social Anthropology and other theoretical and practical areas, such as the excavation and investigation of archaeological sites where there are human skeletal remains, in interaction with researchers interested in biossocial mechanisms that cause diseases among traditional populations and vulnerable groups, in questions related to the ethics and bioethics of research involving human beings present or past, in studies on the relationship between biodiversity and sociodiversity, also contributing to the expertise in the area of genetic and forensic anthropology.

Research Line

Genetic and Forensic Anthropology

It investigates the biological and cultural evolution of the various human groups that colonized the Amazon from its remote past to the present day, encompassing genetics and bioarchaeology. It focus on the distribution of genes involved in familial diseases in isolated populations and in the general population. Studies in the field of forensic anthropology and forensic genetics are carried out.

Research Line

Socioecology of Health and Disease

It seeks to understand the relationships between human populations and the environment both in the past (through osteological and bioarchaeological studies) and in the present (through bioanthropological studies), taking into account the biological and sociocultural variability of the peoples of the region. It investigates the relationship between, on the one hand, environmental and socioeconomic conditions, and, on the other hand, the genetic characteristics, considering the ways in which changes in the environment (natural, social, economic, political) affect human groups.
